In 1983 Neyland recaptured the coveted Harrison-Allen Bowl by beating Cresselly, who were made favourites by most pundits. It was a high scoring game and Neyland made 103-7 in their first innings thanks mainly to a patient 37 by opener Andrew Smith, whilst Phil Sutton, Kim Davies and Tommy Jones all made double figures. It was a reasonable total but Cresselly managed to better it by just one run despite 3 for 21 from Skipper Russell James and 2 for 17 from Jackie Capon.
Neyland did not have the best of starts to the second half of the match as Smith was run out early, but 37 from Sutton set the scene for a big innings from James who hit the ball very hard before being run out on 49, as Neyland scored 122 which left Cresselly needing exactly the same score to win.
James kept the scoreboard reasonably quiet when Cresselly set off in their chase for runs, abetted by old warrior Tommy Jones. But the turning point of the game came when the roly-poly figure of Seymour Morris took the ball from his Skipper. As so often happened, Morris worked magic with his deceptively deceptive swing bowling and he dismissed the three key batsmen in one over. Keith Griffiths and Terry Harvey were both clean bowled and Peter James suffered the same fate on the seventh ball of the over, after an uncharacteristic wide had been bowled by Morris. Gary Davies departed in the next over in the same way and Cresselly tottered from 65 for 3 to 74 for 8. Jackie Capon rounded off proceedings with two wickets in as many balls and the bowl was back at Neyland!
Russell James collected the magnificent trophy from the donor, Mrs Brian Evans, and then had to make the return journey to pick up the man of the match award for his all round performance and no-one would have begrudged him it after he led Neyland from the front!
