Neyland Match Report

Saundersfoot vs Neyland. League, Saturday 17th July 2010. Umpires: Tony Scourfield & D Bowles.
After two tough fixtures in the previous weeks against Carew and Haverfordwest respectively, Neyland had dropped back from second to fourth position in the league. Ahead of this game Saundersfoot, with 5 wins and 5 loses, and coming into this fixture with succesive wins over StIshmaels and Whitland had moved to within 14 points of Neyland. However, despite an astonishing fielding display which saw Neyland uncharacteristically spilling 8 catches, including 4 tough caught and bowled opportunities to Andrew Miller alone, Neyland eventually strolled to victory thanks in no small part to another fine innings from Paul Murray. Paul finished with 82 not out, an innings which included 11 boundaries and one powerfully pulled six. The only thing which prevented a Murray century appeared to be the relatively low Saundersfoot total. Murray gave no chances in the air, although he did nearly run himself out when he called for a single only to find himself around 14 yards short of his ground with the bowler's hands on the ball. Thankfully the bowler's dive had left him in an arkward position, having dived full length to his right Sam Butler had to recover his balance, turn and throw left handed at the stumps from side on. He missed and Murray went on to see Neyland home in some style in only 29 overs.
The win took Neyland back into joint 3rd spot, alongside Narberth, with both sides on 252 points.
Paul Murray was due to represent Pembrokeshire the following day in a fixture against the South Wales League. Patrick Hannon was due to make his debut for the county in the same fixture. Congratulations to Patrick on his well deserved selection, after a few seasons where he has bowled consistently well, and has got on top of all the top batsmen in the county.
With Andrew Miller unavailable for the county on thias occassion, this could otherwise have been the second time this season that three Neyland players had represented the County in a fixture, after Paul Murray, Andrew and Gregg Miller played (and scored 99 runs between them) in the May fixture against Whitland to commemorate the opening of their new Scoreboard.

Gareth Virgo explains to Ian Poole how he won the game, while a tired Paul Murray follows a little way behind.
